Spotlight Artist: Helen Melville

I have always loved art, especially drawing ever since I was little. I remember back in elementary school we decorated a teddy bear picture to represent what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I drew a smock on mine with a paint palette in its hand.  Throughout my childhood I moved around a lot and ended up living in Europe for a few years. I loved seeing the old architecture, the beautiful landscapes, and sculptures and paintings from hundreds of years before.  In college I actually started out in art classes and really enjoyed them, but ultimately, I decided to do a math major instead.  I did make time for an art history class where I learned about all kinds of art, including the art I had seen in Europe growing up. I really liked learning the names of different artists and finding my own favorite pieces, such as Canova’s Cupid and Psyche sculpture and Ruisdael’s View of Haarlem.  Later, when I returned to Europe on vacation, it was really cool to be able to find those pieces and see them in real life for myself.

After college I moved to Loma Linda with my husband for his residency as a pediatrician, and I am working as a math teacher.  I also work on my art on the side.  I love drawing and painting (mostly with watercolors, but I have been starting to use gouache as well.)  I love traveling, and I love painting the things I’ve seen.  It has been so fun living in California and the state’s beauty has also inspired a lot of my art.
