Welcome to Be Smart Teach Art, an online art community for Art Educators in the Inland Empire of Southern California and Beyond! I am Kandra Scullin and I have been an art teacher for over 25 years.  I have loved every minute of my art career. I pinch myself every day that schools pay me to teach a subject that I love so much. I have been honored to be a part-time professor of art and public school teacher for thousands of college and school-age students. I have loved being a snobby fine artist married to a comic-book illustrator and we have been arguing about art for almost 30 years.

The term starving artist has not been lost on me one bit, but I love art so much, I don’t mind the sacrifices.  I make art, I teach art and I discuss art with anyone who will listen.  I travel the globe to see art because it is part of me and I won’t give it up.  

I have lived in the Inland Empire for many years and I have been in contact with many art teachers here and there, but I feel as art teachers we are islands that often drift alone in a vast sea of other disciplines.  As art educators, we need to know that a supportive art education community is out there cheering us on and doing what we are doing day after day, year after year.  So, what are we doing?  Well, some of us artists are giving up a lot of our own art making time to teach art to the next generation of artists! We love teaching art, but it drains a lot of our creativity.  We sometimes need to spend our best energy on our own art, not just teaching it to others. We need a local place to go where we can fill our own artistic well.   

Be Smart Teach Art is an online art education community with resources and workshops that Kandra Scullin created to rejuvenate your art making and art educator skills.  We are here to help put the heart back into art.
